Dr. Machat is one of the true pioneers of laser eye surgery with over 33 years of experience, having performed over 108,000 procedures including laser eye surgery on over 600 eye doctors. He has developed surgical instruments and authored two textbooks on laser vision correction: Excimer Laser Refractive Surgery: Practice and Principles and The Art of LASIK.
Dr. Machat has undergone laser eye surgery himself, and genuinely appreciates what each patient he treats is experiencing. Beyond his world-class expertise, it is his warm and compassionate bedside manner that his patients’ value most.
Dr. Machat gained experience with LASIK in Bogota, Colombia, where the procedure was first developed and began performing LASIK in Canada 5 years before FDA approval in the USA. He is recognized in the industry as one of the original LASIK pioneers and innovators in the field of laser refractive surgery.
Dr. Machat has been a researcher, investigator and/or a certified trainer on 23 different excimer laser models and 16 different femtosecond laser systems. He has trained over 1,000 surgeons in various laser vision correction techniques and has lectured in over 24 countries on five continents.
