PRK Surgery - Photo Refractive Keratectomy Laser Eye Surgery
The LASIK Vision Institute > LASIK Treatments > PRK
PRK surgery (or Photo Refractive Keratectomy) is a form of laser eye surgery where the top layer or clear portion of your eye (epithelial) is gently wiped away. During PRK surgery procedures the excimer laser is then used to sculpt the underlying tissue in an effort to reduce or eliminate your refractive error.
Like LASIK, PRK eye surgery can correct, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Some patients, because of individual variations in the eye anatomy actually do better with PRK surgery than with other forms of laser eye surgery. PRK surgery patients typically have a longer recovery time and need pain medication for several days. This is because most of the pain fibers in the cornea are located in the area affected by PRK surgery. Your surgeon will review this with you if you are a candidate for PRK laser eye surgery.
